Stanley Nelson Tackles HBCUs in Next Doc

Filmmaker Stanley Nelson had eyes glued to PBS as the platform premiered the historically charged Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution, Tuesday night.

On the heels of the film, he announced via Twitter that next up is a two-hour doc on the history of HBCUs.

Working with PBS again, the documentary titled Tell Them We Are Rising: The Story of Historically Black Colleges of Universities, will dive into the significance of HBCUs and their shaping of American culture and national identity. The film will feature the voices of HBCU staff, students, faculty and alumni.

“It is essential that our documentary highlights personal accounts, letters, diaries, photographs and even home movies of the people who have lived the HBCU experience,” Nelson said in a statement.

Tell Them We Are Rising will air on the PBS Independent Lens in 2017.
