Slick Rick Is An American Citizen…Finally
It’s been a long time coming and now Slick Rick “The Ruler” is officially an American citizen.
“I am so proud of this moment. I am relieved to finally put this long chapter behind me,” he said in a statement sent to JET. “I want to thank everyone – my family, friends and fans—who have supported me and stuck by me over these 23 years.”
The English-born, Grammy-nominated emcee was sworn in at an official ceremony in New York Friday.
Slick Rick was at the height of his career in 1990 when he was sentenced to prison for a defense shooting of his cousin who served as his bodyguard at the time. His cousin, who was hired by Rick’s mother/manager, turned out to be wildly problematic. Unfortunately, an innocent bystander was struck and injured during the altercation.
However, in 1998, he received a pardon from former New York Governor David A. Paterson and has since avoided run-ins with the law.
Following a wide celebration with family, friends and top players in the industry, he began receiving deportation threats, and eventually spent time in a deportation lock up.
With his recent victory, the “La Di Da Di” rapper has dual citizenship, which allows him to stay in the country and also travel overseas!
“I am truly blessed—and stay tuned, I will have more to announce soon,” he announced during the ceremony.
While we speculate on this “announcement,” let’s travel through the ultimate storyteller’s career with a few flashback videos.
