Shonda Rhimes x Dee Rees Head to Cable TV

Shonda Rhimes is taking her first dive into the land of cable television.

The Shondaland content creator and her production partner Betsy Beers is teaming up with “Pariah” writer/director Dee Rees for a limited FX series based on the New York Times bestselling book, The Warmth of Other Suns.

Written by Isabel Wilkerson over the course of 15 years, the book serves as a historical study that chronicles the decades-long migration of Black citizens who fled from the South to northern and western cities, in hopes of a better life.

Told through the experiences of Ida Mae Gladney, who fled from Mississippi for a life in Chicago; Dr. Robert Pershing Foster who left Louisiana for Los Angeles, and George Starling who headed for Harlem after leaving Florida, the 622-paged book travels from 1915-1970 and details how nearly 6 million people changed the face of America.

The Warmth of Other Suns series will be executive-produced by Rhimes and Beers under the Shondaland banner and Dee Rees will head the writing and directorial process.

This collaboration is already compelling as Rhimes is known for plot twists and extreme “awe” moments, and Rees’ 2011 Pariah was a festival fav and a recipient of an Indie Spirit Award.

Adding another goodie to the mix, if you’ve been hearing the buzz surrounding the Bessie Smith biopic starring Queen Latifah, Rees penned the script!

These ladies know how to develop and dissect the depths of prominent characters and their stories.

We’ll keep you looped on the air date for the series.
