Shonda Rhimes Has Some Disappointed Fans

Fans are upset with creator and executive producer, Shonda Rhimes, for killing off Dr. Derek ‘McDreamy’ Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) from the hit TV show Grey’s Anatomy.

During last Thursday’s episode, the fictional neurosurgeon saved four lives following a car crash only to be severely injured in a second accident, that left him brain dead. The love of his life Meredith, was then left to make a decision to pull the plug.

Fans are still mourning the fictional death, and taking to social media to demand that Rhimes bring back Dempsey’s character. One fan even went as far as launching a Change.org petition.

“This is important because you cannot have people invest a DECADE into a character and then you just terminate them like that! You have people out here donating blood and organs trying to save lives, wanting to become doctors and all from committing to this television show just to let us down like this. You’ve destroyed us. COMPLETELY!”

The petition has over 22,000 signatures, but it seems like Dempsey’s character will be gone for good.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Rhimes released a statement about the unexpected plot twist:

“Derek Shepherd is and will always be an incredibly important character—for Meredith, for me and for the fans. I absolutely never imagined saying goodbye to our ‘McDreamy.’ Patrick Dempsey’s performance shaped Derek in a way that I know we both hope became a meaningful example—happy, sad, romantic, painful and always true—of what young women should demand from modern love. His loss will be felt by all. Now, Meredith and the entire Grey’s Anatomy family are about to enter uncharted territory as we head into this new chapter of her life. The possibilities for what may come are endless. As Ellis Grey would say: ‘the carousel never stops turning.’”

Grey’s Anatomy will return to ABC this week at it’s scheduled time. For the upset fans out there: This too shall pass.
