Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black is set to return for season 5 on Friday, June 9th, and Sesame Street is already celebrating.
Sesame Street continues to get more and more clever every time we watch it and apparently, the folks who run the classic children’s show love Orange is the New Black as much as we do. Though the series, which centers around the women of Litchfield Penitentiary isn’t exactly kid friendly, Sesame Street just found a way to make OITNB G-rated.
The segment follows Piper, a puppet who starts her first day at Litchfield Academy and introduces her classmates to oranges. According to Piper, oranges are “the new snack.” At first everyone is annoyed that Piper is overlooking the cookies (because they are cookies), and then, they’re confused and think the orange is some sort of ball, but eventually, everyone come around and begins enjoying the citrus fruit. Watch the parody below.
Piper and her oranges aren’t the only OITNB parallels. Red is the name of the snack monitor; Piper has a classmate named Googly Eyes who even has the same bantu knots as Uzo Aduba on the series and the theme song even channels, Regina Spektor’s “You’ve Got Time.” Seriously, how spot-on is this?
When OITNB returns on Friday, the ladies will be raging war against the prison and its guards who are responsible for the death of Poussey Washington (Samira Whiley). Taking place over the course of three days and in real time, nothing at Litchfield Penitentiary will be the same once the smoke clears.
