There’s no school like the old school and a gaggle of soulful seniors are taking us back to class in this Alex Boye cover of “Uptown Funk.”
It’s called the “Oldtown Cover” and it features an African-influenced rendition of Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’ hit, starring several stylish elderly gentlemen and a troupe called “the Dancing Grannies.”
The parody works on every level. After all, the original is an infectious homage to classic showmen — from the dirtiest, funkiest of blues (think Bobby Blue Bland and Muddy Waters), to the Ohio Players and James Brown, to Prince channeling James Brown through his work with Morris Day and The Time … zoot suits and all.
Meaning, “Uptown Funk” is already a new song meant to sound like an old song. Having some folks who probably saw Jackie Wilson live in concert when he was still dropping down and hitting those splits in his prime only makes it work even better.
Don’t believe me, just watch!
