‘Red Band Society’ Ad Features Questionable Label

Fall is almost here, which means new shows will be taking over our weeknights.

With Shondaland’s Thursday night takeover and the anticipation of black-ish on Wednesday nights, black and brown faces have a place in this season’s lineup.

Amongst those new shows is FOX’s Red Band Society starring Oscar-winning actress, Octavia Spencer. In an interview with, Spencer, known for her no-nonsense powerhouse roles, describes her portrayal of her character, Nurse Jackson, slightly different.

“You want to know why this woman is the way she is and wants to be a caregiver? I think that the show of strength or what people think is strong is not necessarily the case. I think some of the strongest people are people who are quiet and not so brazen with their emotion.”

With that self-perspective of her character, it is interesting to find out what exactly was meant when FOX Studios apparently approved a promotional poster that labeled Spencer a “Scary Bitch’ while co-stars gained the labels like, “ Hot DOC,” “The Girl Next Floor,” “The Player,” etc.

According to, the poster caused an outrage on Spencer’s behalf and the National Action Network’s LA chapter requested that FOX discontinue its use of the poster.

As of yet, Spencer  has not spoken in defense of or against the promotional poster. Maybe it doesn’t bother her and society is being too sensitive.

Red Band Society, produced by Steven Spielberg, focuses on a group of unlikely friends dealing with illness and the adults who mentor them through the highs and lows of adolescence at Los Angeles’ Ocean Park Hospital.

The season premiere airs Wednesday night on FOX 9/8c.
