You probably know Priyanka Chopra as the brilliant FBI recruit Alex Parrish from ABC’s Quantico, but in her upcoming film Baywatch, Chopra is about to tap into her dark side.
Victoria Leeds, Chopra’s drug smuggling devious Baywatch villain, was originally written for a male actor. However, the 34-year old has no problem shattering expectations. The upcoming film which stars Zac Efron and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson among others, follows the two lifeguards as they uncover a criminal plot that threatens the future of the bay.
Chopra recently chatted with Entertainment Weekly about why her character is out for blood. She said, “She has a point to prove. She’s a woman in a man’s world. She’s not just a random woman with money; she’s self-made. This is not just drugs and money for her; it’s power. That’s the cause.” We are thrilled that a woman of color was given this opportunity because it certainly could have gone the traditional cookie-cutter white male route.
Baywatch director Seth Gordon said he chose to cast the Quantico actress because, “As soon as I spoke to her, I knew she could do it. I really loved the idea of Dwayne going up against a female antagonist. Her approach is purely psychological. It’s about outsmarting; it’s about out-winning, it’s about taking advantage of the male ego, all that stuff… She really was just a much more interesting person for him to go up against, because it wasn’t going to be just brawn or grit.”
We certainly hope The Rock and Zac Efron have been eating their Wheaties because it doesn’t look like Chopra’s Victoria Leeds is one to mess with.
Baywatch slides into theaters May 25, 2017.
