According to the group’s Facebook page, Cordes died at a hospital in New Jersey from renal kidney disease after struggling with diabetes for years.

“Pain from diabetes can’t harm you anymore,” the note on the social networking site read. “My heart is at peace b-cuz u suffered so long.”

P.M. Dawn, which consisted of brothers Attrell and Jarrett, found success in the 1990s with their brand of laid-back hip hop. The group’s 1991 album, Of the Heart, of the Soul and of the Cross: The Utopian Experience,  catapulted them to success, earning the brothers critical and commercial praise, and a number one single.

P.M. Dawn’s 1992 song, “I’d Die Without You,” has remained popular throughout the years, inspiring a new generation of artists.

Cordes is survived by his wife Mary, and their three children, Christian, Mia and Brandon.
