Oprah Lost 40lbs. & Gained a Whole Lot of Money

One thing is clear, Oprah Winfrey has the midas touch. While the media mogul ruled daytime on her popular show, many spoke of “The Oprah Effect,” or rather her ability to turn just about anything–books, films, and even pajamas–into an overnight success. Years after leaving her popular talk show to launch her network, Oprah’s still got it.

In October 2015, Winfrey made news when she became a spokesperson for Weight Watchers after buying 10 percent of the company. Buoyed by “The Oprah Effect,”  Weight Watchers’ stock climbed. It went even higher this week after the media magnate announced she lost 40 pounds following the program.

“Weight Watchers is easier than any other program I’ve ever been on. It’s a lifestyle, a way of eating, and a way of living that’s so freeing,” Winfrey said in a press release. “You never feel like you are on a diet and it works.”

Throughout her entire career, Oprah has struggled with her weight. So if she can finally get off the yo-yo dieting scale by following Weight Watchers, many will no doubt follow her lead, especially as the New Year approaches. After announcing she dropped the weight, the company’s stock once again soared–hitting a high of 19 percent.

In a new Weight Watchers ad, Oprah explained how she lost the weight.

“Like everybody, I want to live a life that’s full. Full of the happiness found in living the life I want,” Winfrey said. “Full of the energy that comes with good health. Full of the great foods I love, and at Weight Watchers I don’t have to choose between weight loss and living well.”
