Octavia Spencer to Star in Madam C.J. Walker Project
Octavia Spencer has been glowing up the screen and while we’re anticipating to see her alongside Taraji P. Henson and Janelle Monae in Hidden Figures, due in theaters for a limited release on Dec. 25, she’s already working on her next project and it’s also tapping into history.
Not only will she be taking lead, Spencer will also be stepping into the role of producer. The project will tell the story of legendary entrepreneur and philanthropist Madam C.J. Walker.
Although the mini-series is currently untitled, it will be based off of A’Lelia Bundles’ bestselling biography, On Her Own Ground. Bundles is the great-great-granddaughter of Walker.
Walker’s story has always been fascinating. Below is a snapshot of what life was like for the now celebrated entrepreneur:
Walker was a daughter of slaves, orphaned at seven, married at 14 and became a widow at the age of 20. After spending decades laboring as a washerwoman – making $1.50 a week, she discovered a formula for Black women that would change hair maintenance and catapult Walker into a revolutionary businesswoman.
By the time of Walker’s death in 1919, she had overcome various obstacles and built a beauty empire that remains prominent in the hair-care industry, today.
Zero Gravity will produce the series alongside Spencer. As of now, there aren’t any further production details but this is one that we will definitely keep our eyes and ears open for.
