Night Cap: Spike Lee on ‘Stephen Colbert’
Spike Lee stopped by The Late Show With Stephen Colbert to chat about his upcoming film Chi-Raq and the death of LaQuan McDonald, a 17-year-old Black youth fatally shot 16 times by a white police officer.
Dressed in a hat decorated with the title of his most recent movie and a red, green and black beaded, peace necklace to match, the director got real about violence across America, specifically in Chicago.
After explaining the premise of his film, which follows a group of Chi-Town women withholding sex from their gang banging boyfriends, the 58-year-old addressed the need for stronger gun control laws and peaceful protests — especially following the video release of the shooting of McDonald.
“I’m glad that the tape is being released, because this is democracy,” he said. “Sometimes we think we can pick and choose what America should see.”
Right on, Spike.
