Extended ‘New Edition’ Film Clip Brings the Drama
NE fans, rejoice! Today, BET announced a premiere date and released an extended clip for the upcoming three-part miniseries, The New Edition Story.
Starting January 24, 2017, fans will get the background scoop on all of the juicy drama of one of music history’s greatest groups. Beginning in Boston in the 1980s, the New Edition Story follows the group’s rise, breakups, and multiple reunions throughout the last 30 years.
The film stars Bryshere Y. Gray as Michael Bivins, Elijah Kelley as Ricky Bell, singer-songwriter Luke James as Johnny Gill, Algee Smith as Ralph Tresvant, Keith Powers as Ronnie DeVoe, and newcomer Woody McClain as Bobby Brown. And best of all? All the New Edition members served as consultants and producers on the film.
Last weekend during the Urbanworld Film Festival, Ronnie DeVoe said watching someone play him on screen initially made him nervous, but he was won over by the actors’ performances.
I was nervous as hell. Jesse about two and half weeks ago sat down with Rick, myself, Mike and my uncle [Brooke Payne] and he was able to show us two or three of the scenes, and it just felt like wow, those NE for lifers have been holding us down. This was just a passion for us, but they’ve been with us for the last thirty- plus years. So just sitting there it felt so surreal. A lot of times in life when a person’s story is told, they are not here to see it. So, like my grandmother would always say, “Let me smell my roses while I’m here!” So, I’m smelling the roses and it feels great.
In the newest clip of the New Edition Story, we see the relationship between Bobby, Ronnie, Ricky, and Mike unraveling when Brown, the self-proclaimed King of R&B, wanted a little too much stage time.

The New Edition Story airs January 24-27 on BET.
