Beauty and the Beast is one thing, but an all-female superhero film with a princess touch is quite another.
It’s still in the very early stages, but an “Avengers-style” Disney princess superhero script is floating around Hollywood as we speak. The film is currently titled Princess and has been written by newcomer Nir Paniry. The script is apparently so dope that Disney is taking it very seriously, which is a huge deal.
Even though the script is still being shopped around, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales director Joachim Ronnin is already attached to direct Princess. However, other major details about the film are currently super under wraps. With the smash success of Disney’s most recent Princess flicks like Moana and Frozen, this would be the opportune time for the studio to continue riding those high waves. However, for this film to do really well with audiences whenever it does make it to the big screen, it must captivate and capture 21st-century women in all of their glory.
It seems important here to point out that even though this project sounds sensational, both writer Paniry and director, Ronnin are men. This is not to say that male writers can’t write incredible stories about women and that male directors can’t present amazing women onscreen; however, Hollywood definitely has a major issue with gender equality both in front of and behind the camera.
It’s unlikely that we will see this film anytime before 2020. It needs to be purchased, staffed, cast and so forth, so there is plenty of time to set some incredibly talented and diverse women up in major roles for the film. Either way, we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for more deets on this.
Would you be down to watch an Avengers/Disney Princess mashup?
