Mo’Nique joins cast of ‘Bessie’ as Ma’Rainey

Mo’Nique will return to Hollywood for her first comeback since Precious in a new HBO biopic on blues singer Bessie Smith.

The biopic, titled ‘Bessie’, will focus on Smith’s personal life and her rise to fame as one the most successful artists of the 1920s and 30s. It will also touch on Smith’s personal life, her issues with alcoholism and her alleged affair with music icon, Ma’Rainey, who will be played by Mo’Nique.

The role of Bessie will be played by Queen Latifah and she will also serve as executive producer.

This is a big move for Mo’Nique seeing as she has not landed any major parts since her Oscar win back in 2010 for Best-Supporting Actress in Precious. She recently told media outlets that the reason for her sudden absence from Hollywood was because she was blackballed after receiving her award.

Alongside the two actresses, Bessie will also feature Michael K. Williams, Khandi Alexander, Tika Sumpter and American stand-up comedian Mike Epps.

The biopic debuts Saturday, May 16 at 8 p.m. ET on HBO.
