As Told to S. Tia Brown
Anyone say they’re a model. But if you’re not making dollars carrying the “title” it doesn’t make sense. That’s why JET asked Real Housewives of Atlanta’s Cynthia Bailey to give tips on the business of beauty. Each week the Bravo star— who’s been a working model for three decades—will share inside scoop on the modeling business.
This Week’s Tip:
Understand the business. A model is someone who is hired to showcase or sell a product for a client— and paid to do so. That said, there are different types of modeling, including, editorial, catalog and advertising, showroom, fitness, runway and lifestyle & promotional. Each area requires different looks and strengths. If you are interested in pursuing a career in the industry it is imperative that you take time to research which niche of the field complements your body’s natural weight and height (ex. runway models are expected to be taller and leaner than print models) before you begin pursuing representation and employment opportunities.
