On January 31, 1961 in Rock Hill SC, the men who would become known as the “Friendship 9,” walked across town and sat down at a lunch counter. They were beaten, dragged outside, threatened, and sentenced to 30 days of hard labor at the York County Prison Camp. They were allowed no defense, afforded no rights, and offered no justice. Misty Copeland made history by becoming the first African-American principal dancer with the prestigious American Ballet Theatre and is considered the pinnacle of ballet in the US. Her documentary takes an intimate look at her groundbreaking work and the obstacles she overcame to shatter barriers and transcend art. It airs on PBS Monday, Feb. 8 at 10pm est.
