Michael Jordan Responds to Charlotte Shooting
This has been another week plagued with the deaths of unarmed Black men at the hands of police. As the world continues to be in a state of unrest, the recent shooting in Charlotte has caused NBA legend, Michael Jordan to speak out and address the issue at hand.
As owner of the Charlotte Hornets, Jordan released a statement that called for non-violent solutions to the fatal shooting of Charlotte, North Carolina resident Keith Lamont Scott.
“First, I want to express my condolences to the Scott family for their loss. I also wish for a full recovery to those who have been injured,” he wrote in a letter to the Associated Press. “In light of the tragic events of the past three days, it is more important than ever that we restore calm and come together, as a community, in peaceful demonstration and conversation, and in constructive and non-violent ways. As part of the fabric of Charlotte, the Hornets organization is committed to working with civic leaders, our elected leaders and law enforcement to foster more trust, transparency and understanding so we can heal and grow together as a community.”
Jordan’s response comes after Scott, who was reportedly reading a book in car, was killed by Officer Brentley Vinson outside of an apartment building, Tuesday. The shooting caused an uproar of protest that included shutting down an entire interstate, looting and stand-offs with police.
