The Akils Working On ‘Black Lightning’

Husband and wife producing duo Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil are having a great year. While Mara Brock Akil walked away from her baby, BET’s hit show Being Mary Jane, the Akils inked an overall deal with Warner Bros in 2015, and have several projects in the works. Recently, they sold a sitcom pilot to ABC, and now they’re getting into the superhero game.

According to Deadline, the Akils have partnered with Greg Berlanti to bring one of DC Comics’ first Black superheroes to the small screen.

Black Lightning first debuted in comic books in 1977. In the comics, Black Lightning aka Jefferson Pierce is an Olympic athlete who returns to his neighborhood after winning gold. Though Pierce doesn’t want to be a superhero, he’s dragged into it by his daughter, a principal, who relentlessly fights for justice, and a star student who is targeted by gangs.

Black Lightning has been in the works at the CW for years now, but with Marvel’s Luke Cage hitting Netflix in September and Black Panther rolling into theaters in 2018, Black superheroes are in popular demand.

The Black Lightning news comes less than an a week after it was announced the Akils’ series Documenting Love landed a pilot commitment from ABC. The show is described as a “comedic love story about a modern-day power couple,” and marked the couple’s first sale since leaving BET.
