Hollywood is currently obsessing over reboots and live musicals, but we’re really confused about this one.
After the success of The Wiz! and Grease, ABC has decided to get into the live musical game, and they are going to bring back The Wonderful World of Disney to do it. If you recall in the ’90s, The Wonderful World of Disney gave us such classics as Cinderella, starring Brandy and Whitney Houston and My Date with the President’s Daughter. However, it looks like ABC is ready to give one of Disney classics the live-action treatment with a musical spin.
At the ABC Upfronts, the network announced they would be premiering The Little Mermaid Live! on October 3rd. Now we love The Little Mermaid, Ursula was actually an icon, Ariel’s shell bikini top was giving us timeless fashions, and Sebastian is the skeptical BFF we all need. However, since much of the story takes place under the sea, we’re a little baffled as to how ABC plans to make this work on live television.
Apparently, the musical will be a live action/animation hybrid presentation, and it will feature soon-to-be-unveiled “celebrity artists” to perform Alan Menken and Howard Ashman’s songs from the 1989 film. We just hope that the cast is lit because we can’t have just anyone singing “Kiss the Girl.”
If you love The Little Mermaid, but you’re uncertain about this live musical version, you should hold out for Disney’s live-action feature film which will have music from Hamilton‘s Lin-Manuel Miranda. There is no release date on that one yet, but it just might be worth the wait.
Will you be watching, The Little Mermaid Live! when it swims across your TV screen on October 3rd?
