Listen: D’Angelo Releases ‘Black Messiah’
After nearly 15 years of anticipation for another soul delivery from Mr. “How Does It Feel,” D’Angelo has ears tuned in to his latest project, Black Messiah.
With a 15-second tease of the album released on Friday, December 12 followed up with a funk-infused Saturday release of “Sugah Daddy” and a New York listening session on Sunday, the full package is now available to stream (below) and purchase on iTunes.
His socio-political references, as displayed in “The Charade,” show that his conscience is alert and aware of society’s current happenings with vivid lyrics that are sure to be on “most-talked-about” lists, such as: “All we wanted was a chance to talk, ‘stead we only got outlined in chalk/Feet have bled a million miles we’ve walked, revealing at the end of the day, the charade”.
The album, of course has its sensual essentials as well. “Really Love” is a smoky ballad expressing adoration for a significant other. It’s smooth – laid back and feels right.
In a style that is truly D’Angelo’s, rugged and soulful in tone, funky and experimental when it comes to the rhythm and chords, Black Messiah offers 12-tracks of psychedelic trance fueled with pure soul.
