Lee Daniels, Jussie Smollett Receive Death Threats
Empire creator Lee Daniels, along with actor Jussie Smollett, received death threats for their depiction of a homosexual Black male in hip-hop on the show.
Daniels made the threats public on Sunday at the 2015 Produced By Conference in Los Angeles, according to Complex.
“Homophobia is real. It exists… Jussie and I both get death threats. But we will continue to do our thing,” Daniels said to the audience. “I have to relate to these people honestly,” Daniels said of the show’s diverse audience. “That trash can scene? It happened.”
Daniels was referring to a scene from Season 1, where Terrence Howard’s character, Lucious Lyon, threw Jussie Smollett’s character, Jamal, into the garbage after discovering that he was gay.
Empire returns to Fox for a second, 18-episode season on Sept. 23.
Keep doing you, guys.
