Kerry Washington Not ‘Hood’ Enough and Other Foolery

Before her leading role as ‘Olivia Pope’, the fast-talking political fixer in ABC’s Scandal, Kerry Washington made a name for herself as a sassy single-parent, hip-hop chick in Saving The Last Dance and a list of other films, including an expert jewelry thief in Lift.

However, when she went to audition for two pilots, she found herself pinkslipped for a very insulting reason.  This, according to one of Variety’s Actors on Actors interviews with Aziz Ansari.

“Before ‘Scandal,’ I was actually cast in two other pilots. Both went to series, but I was fired and recast,” Washington spills to Ansari, who has dealt with his own set of stereotypes. “For both, it was because they wanted me to sound more ‘girlfriend,’ more like ‘hood,’ more ‘urban.’”

Good gracious.  We know it’s rough out there, but to hear about this Hollywood Shuffle madness happening not too long ago….. A damn shame is what it is.
