Katy Perry Accused of Racism

Katy Perry is the latest pop star being accused of cultural misappropriation.

Her background dancers’ voluptuous mummy costumes, which include padded butts, cartoonish full lips, and gigantic hoop earrings, have outraged many, who’ve accused the artist of objectifying the bodies of Black women.

The backlash is reminiscent of performances from fellow pop singers Miley Cyrus and Lily Allen, which have featured African-American women as “props.”

But this isn’t the first time, Katy Perry has offended a group of people. A petition was created to remove her “Dark Horse” video from YouTube because of the use of an Allah pendant.

Also, she garnered negative reactions when she dressed in a Japanese geisha costume at the American Music Awards earlier this year.

She responded to the criticism of her ensemble saying, “all I was trying to do is just give a very beautiful performance about a place that I have so much love for and find so much beauty in…”

The “California Gurls” singer has yet to make a statement about her latest controversy.
