For the last few months, Jhené Aiko has been celebrating some of her favorite musicians’ birthdays with special tributes. In June, the songstress paid homage to Tupac Shakur by recreating three classic photos of the fallen star. This July, she is singing Bill Withers’ praises…literally.
Withers, who turned 77 on the Fourth of July, is responsible for hits including “Ain’t No Sunshine” and “Lovely Day,” and the California hippie decided to share her rendition of the two songs.
In the nearly 5-minute YouTube video posted on Wednesday, the 27-year-old gives us a glimpse of what a recording session with her could look like as she belts out the tracks to the strums of one lone electric guitar.
Aiko even honored the R&B legend with her own words. Here’s a bit of what she wrote about him in the description:
Bill Withers’ music has been blessing my ears since I was a baby…One of the things that inspires me the most about Bill is his attention to lyrics and storytelling. It wasn’t about his image, being flashy, or putting on a “show.” For him, it was about the song. No fluff, just pure feeling.
