Jesse Williams Stars in ‘Stay Woke’ Documentary
Jesse Williams is a very vocal member of the #StayWoke movement. The 2016 EBONY Power 100 honoree is a prominent figure when it comes to working toward social progress and change.
When scrolling down his Twitter feed, it’s not rare to find him updating fans and followers with the latest social justice issues, news and injustices. So, it totally makes sense for the actor and former educator to be a part of a documentary aligned with the very topics that are close to his heart.
In the documentary, Stay Woke: The Black Lives Matter Movement, Williams encourages others to be more aware of America’s adverse treatment of Black lives by exploring the evolution of a movement that is committed to the same mission.
In an interview with The Huffington Post, the activist spoke to the creation of Black Lives Matter, its emerging hashtag, the challenges within the movement to create lasting change, and the importance of him being a part of the documentary.
“The Black community has been in a state of emergency and crisis and pervasive traumatic stress disorder since 1619…there hasn’t been a week in the history of this country where innocent, well-meaning human beings haven’t been treated as subhuman by state agents,” Williams told The Huffington Post. “We have been conditioned to believe that Black people are subhuman… and are told all of these intrinsically destructive tropes, which are flagrantly dishonest.”
Stay Woke: The Black Lives Matter Movement airs on BET on May 26 at 9 p.m. ET.
