Jennifer Hudson Lands Role in ‘Hairspray Live!’

Jennifer Hudson has definitely found her groove. Combining her talents of singing and acting, the American Idol alum is making her mark in musical theater.

Finishing her run as the sensually jazzy ‘Suge Avery’ in ‘The Color Purple’, J-Hud joins the cast of NBC’s ‘Hairspray Live!’ as Motormouth Maybelle.

The holiday special is set to premiere on Dec. 7.

A classic musical, the Broadway production is set in Baltimore in 1962. Tracy Turnbald, a teenager, dreams of dancing on “The Corny Collins Show”, a local TV program. With all odds against her, somehow she lands a role on the show and her existence shoots to overnight stardom.

As her star rises, she meets a variety of characters along the way. There’s Link, the heartthrob; Amber, the ambitious mean girl; Seaweed, an African-American boy she meets in detention and his blabbering mother aka Motormouth Maybelle, who owns a local record store. In Tracy’s efforts to integrate the all-white “Corny Collins Show”, her mother encourages her campaign.

Hairspray Live! follows the outbreak success of last year’s The Wiz Live!\

Tune-in Dec.7 at 8pm ET/PT.
