Some of us might have thought J. Cole was power tripping when he abruptly upped the release date of “Born Sinner” to compete with Kanye West’s “Yeezus.” While he didn’t beat out Mr. West the first week, Cole tops the charts this week at number one.
Originally prepping for a June 25th release date, Cole sped things up and gave hip-hop lovers something to think about when they made their music purchases on June 18th.
“Kanye West is one of the greatest artists of our generation,” he tweeted. “Which is exactly why I’m moving my release date up.”
Cole not only followed Kanye to music shelves, but he also matched his competitive nature. Remember when Ye went up against 50 back in 2008 and won in their head-to-head album drop battle?
The “Crooked Smile” rapper proved to be a strong contender for the number one spot with his “Dollar & A Dream” tour that just wrapped (yes, it only cost $1 to get in) and the release of at least 10 free tracks leading up to the drop of his sophomore effort.
It took three weeks, but it looks like slow and steady does win the race. Congratulations, Cole!
