Friday Fighting Words: Is J. Cole Coming for His Idols?

Now, you know we at JET aren’t out here trying to feed into rap beefs.  After all, they can go from lyrical to lethal.  But we can’t pretend that J Cole isn’t out here pulling a Kendrick Lamar “Control” verse move on some of the industry faves, according to the video for “False Prophets.”

A number of outlets have taken note of several subliminal body blows in two new songs from his upcoming effort, 4 Your Eyez Only.

For example, some are speculating this heat in a song called “False Prophets” is aimed at Kanye West.  As we are super worried about, and pulling for, ‘Ye, we hope not but here goes.

Watch the video and then consider this…

“False Prophets (Be Like This),” Cole spits bars that some listeners have taken to be shots at Kanye West.

“Ego in charge of every move / He’s a star and we can’t look away due to the days that he caught our hearts,” Cole raps. “He’s falling apart but we deny it / Just to find that shitty half-assed drop, we always buy it / When he tell us he a genius but it’s clearer lately / It’s been hard for him to look into the mirror lately.”

Well, alright then.

It also seems like these words might have been built for the “Controlla” aka Drake:

“Maybe it’s my fault for idolizing n—as based off the words they be rapping / Come to find out these n—as don’t even write they shit / Hear some new style bubbling up then they bite that shit.”

The choicest words might have been reserved for Wale, according to industry interpretations:

“And I know he so bitter he can’t see his own blessings/Goddamn, ni**a, you too blind to see you got fans, ni**a.”

Welp, let’s just say that it looks like Drizzy, Wale and ‘Ye should probably not expect invitations to Cole’s release party. That beat is nice tho…
