To prepare viewers for the season 4 premiere of Game of Thrones, HBO is teaming up with an array of urban artists for Catch The Throne, a mixtape based around the series.
Catch the Throne will feature tracks from 10 artists including Common, Wale and Big Boi, who’s a self-proclaimed fan of the series.
“I’m really happy,” Big Boi revealed to The Wall Street Journal. “I get to be part of the process of one of my favorite shows.”
Lucinda Martinez, HBO’s senior vice president for multicultural marketing, says the goal of Catch the Throne is to reach out to the show’s multicultural audience. In addition to African-American artists, the project will also feature records from Latin artists such as Daddy Yankee and up-and-coming rapper, Bodega Bamz.
According to Neilsen, viewership for Game of Thrones’ third season was 13.2 percent Black, 9.2 percent Hispanic and 76.6 White. Those numbers aren’t different from HBO’s overall primetime viewership for last year, which was 16.8 percent Black, 12.3 percent Hispanic and 72.9 percent White. Viewership of the network for both African-Americans and Hispanics has been steadily decreasing over the past two years.
“Our multicultural audiences are a very important part of our subscribers, and we don’t want to take them for granted,” Martinez told The Wall Street Journal.
But Common is optimistic about the impact Catch the Throne, will have not only on the show, but with viewers and music fans alike. He likens the mixtape’s development to early Wu-Tang Clan records.
“Twenty years ago, Wu-Tang was breaking ground,” Common said. “Nowadays, people are open to anything. There are no limitations in hip-hop culture.”
Catch the Throne drops March 7, while the show will premiere on April 6.
