Happy Headlines: Sly Stone Wins Royalties
After a five-year battle, funk legend Sly Stone has been awarded $5 million in a lawsuit against his ex-manager and ex-lawyer in unpaid royalties.
Stone, whose government name is Sylvester Stewart, filed a suit in 2010, claiming that his former manager Gerald Goldstein and attorney Glenn Stone diverted funds due to him for more than 20 years.
Earlier this week, the jury ruled in favor of the musician.
The court decided that Goldstein’s entertainment company, Even St. Productions, must pay $2.5 million, Goldstein must pay $2.4 million and Glenn Stone must pay $50,000.
The 71-year-old, who had fallen on hard times in recent years, hadn’t been paid since 1989.
“They just wanted to punch this poor guy in the face,” Nicholas Hornberger, Stone’s attorney, said after the verdict.
According to Hornberger, Goldstein had been using the money to live lavishly. Now, the musical icon can enjoy a more-than-comfortable lifestyle himself. He certainly deserves it.
