Giving You the Gospel: Tasha Cobbs

34-year old Tasha Cobbs has an undeniable powerhouse voice that’s caused her to soar to the top of gospel charts. In 2013, Cobbs released her debut album “Grace” full of songs that you’re bound to hear at any church in America, on any given Sunday. But none of that has gone to her head. The Georgia native simply has a heart for God, and wants to please him. Tasha recently released her second album “One Place LIVE”. Find out why she doesn’t feel any pressure to have a great second album, and how she’s been able to stay grounded while living in the limelight.

JET: Tell us about your new album One Place LIVE and the meaning behind the name.

Tasha Cobbs: About 17 years ago, my mother introduced a song to us that she’d gotten in her sleep. I could never write anything to go with it, but last year I was finally able to write the song. Also, the other songs on the album, they bring you to that one place that you desire to be with Jesus, no distractions, focusing solely on him.  We added “LIVE”, because about 5,000 people came in to be apart of the experience and you can hear them throughout the album worshipping and singing along.

JET: Your last album Grace was extremely popular. Congregations around the world were singing your songs for Sunday morning worship. Do you feel pressure to follow up with another great album?

Tasha Cobbs: No pressure. It really isn’t my focus to compete with the last album, but to add to it.  If they would’ve allowed me, I would have named this album Grace Two. With every project I release, it will just be an add on to the previous project.

JET: What’s your favorite song on One Place LIVE?

Tasha Cobbs: It changes everyday. Today is “This Is The Freedom.” It’s a fun, uptempo song, kind of like “Happy.”

JET: How do you stay grounded and manage to have a true, authentic relationship with God in the midst of a “Hollywood” lifestyle?

Tasha Cobbs: I grew up in a home of pastors. I called them “Jesus Juniors.” They were really saved. My Dad wasn’t much of a talker, but every time we spoke on the phone, before hanging up he would say “Tasha, stay at the feet of Jesus.” They had a huge impact on my life. When I was younger, I fell in love with the Jesus they loved. As I got older, I fell in love with the Jesus I came to know for myself. Also, I’m not perfect by any means, but I have a heart to please God.

JET: Leave us with a word of inspiration.

Tasha Cobbs: I tell my mentees all the time that my life is an example of the scripture that says “God rewards the faithful.” I’ve been faithful to my dad in ministry. I’ve been faithful to my pastor and the church’s ministry, and God looked down and said “Hey, if I can trust her with their ministries, I can definitely trust her with her own.”  A lot of times, we try to kick doors open ourselves, when we just need to be faithful where we are and where God has us for the moment. God rewards the faithful. Be faithful and wait on him.
