Gina Prince-Bythewood Is Directing Marvel’s Newest Series ‘Cloak & Dagger’

Marvel has the superhero game on lock, and it looks like they aren’t planning on stopping anytime soon.

From their epic films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to their series on Netflix, ABC, and FX, Marvel is everywhere, and it looks like FreeForm is ready to tip their hat in the ring with their new upcoming series, Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger.

The series is a coming of age tale that follows Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson. The enemies turned couple are from starkly different backgrounds, each growing up with a secret they never dared share with another soul. Love & Basketball scribe and Shots Fired creator Gina Prince-Bythewood will be directing the highly anticipated pilot which is set to premiere sometime in the 2017-2018 television season.

The 10-episode series has always found its leads with The Night Of’s Aubrey Joseph starring as Ty aka Cloak and former Disney Channel star Olivia Holt as Tandy aka Dagger. Once a privileged little girl, Tandy Bowen watched as her family was destroyed by a disastrous storm that uprooted her life. Now in her late teens, an unexpected encounter with a boy named Tyrone sparks a life changing event. Tyrone”Ty” Johnson wanted nothing more than to prove he was fearless. But when everything he held close was taken away, life taught Tyrone to be afraid. Now older and more sheltered, Tyrone closes himself off. But when he meets a girl named Tandy on the streets of NYC, his life changes forever.

When the pair gets taken advantage of by drug dealers looking to experiment they gain superpowers. Tyrone gets a cloak that grants him teleportation abilities linked to a “darkforce dimension,” while Tandy picked up the ability to shoot powerful blades of light from her hands. She finds out later that they can cure drug addiction. With their newfound powers the couple team up to fight crime.

Knowing Marvel’s reputation and Gina Prince-Bythewood’s work, Cloak & Dagger should be lit. Will you be checking it out?
