First Look: Nate Parker’s ‘The Birth Of A Nation’
Nate Parker creates with the intent to raise awareness and educate people on the rich history of African Americans.
The stories told are important and often forgotten, overlooked or sadly, dismissed.
Parker’s documentary film AmeriCAN Race examined the Black male crisis as it relates to the dehumanizing notion of the Black man and also highlighted various programs that are countering the issues and creating solutions to the problems.
Continuing his work as an actor, writer, director, Parker used his creative juices and knack for historical storytelling to bring the story of Nat Turner, a literate slave and preacher, to the forefront, with the anticipated film, The Birth of A Nation.
Set against the backdrop of the antebellum South, the story follows Nat Turner, whose financially strained owner, Samuel Turner, accepts an offer to use Nat’s preaching to subdue unruly slaves. After witnessing the depths of racism and its volatile nature, Nat uses his intellect to devise a plan to lead his people to freedom.
Parker stars in the film alongside Gabrielle Union, Aja Naomi King (How To Get Away With Murder), Jackie Earle Haley, Armie Hammer and Mark Boone Jr.
The Birth Of A Nation is set to premiere at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival.
