A new Look At Danai Gurira As Afeni Shakur In ‘All Eyez On Me’

In celebration of Mother’s Day check out these never-before-seen stills of Danai Gurira as Afeni Shakur in All Eyez On Me.

Benny Boom’s highly anticipated Tupac biopic All Eyez On Me will be premiering in theaters in just over a month. The film focuses on the untold story of the prolific rapper, actor, poet and activist Tupac Shakur (Demetrius Shipp Jr.), from his early days in New York to his status as one of the world’s most recognized and influential voices. And yet, despite the late rapper’s profound life and legacy, Boom has also been careful to highlight the women in Tupac’s life including actress Jada Pinkett Smith (Kat Graham) and Pac’s mother, Black Panther and activist Afeni Shakur (Danai Gurira).

The elder Shakur had her own astounding story. Afeni meaning “lover of people” and Shakur being Arabic for “thankful to God,” respectively was a sectional leader of the Black Panther Party’s Harlem chapter where she became a mentor to new members during the 1960’s. In April 1969, Shakur along with 21 other suspects was arrested on charges of conspiring with other Black Panthers to carry out bombings in New York. They were aptly named “Panther 21.” Pregnant during her trial and facing up to 300 years in prison, Shakur decided to represent herself. She was acquitted in May 1971 after an eight-month trial and on June 16, 1971, she gave birth to her son, Tupac Shakur.

In honor of Mother’s Day and the unbreakable bond between the hip-hop legend and his mother check out these exclusive movie stills from All Eyez On Me.

All Eyez On Me will premiere on June 16, 2017, which would have been Tupac’s 46th birthday.
