Erykah Badu Highlights Mental Illness With Style
Erykah Badu teamed with fashion designer Kerby Jean-Richmond to bring awareness to mental health issues during New York Fashion Week. Badu made her fashion styling debut with the Pyer Moss line, one that previously paid tribute to the Black Lives Matter movement at last year’s NYFW.
Jean-Raymond’s second collection entitled, “DOUBLE BIND” is dedicated to those suffering from depression and mental health issues.
In a Facebook post, Badu states, “I had the pleasure of styling PYER MOSS’ 2016 fall show. [Kerby] decided to focus on Depression as the theme of his show. I was focused on helping him communicate this. DOUBLE BIND, the title of the show, is a term that describes two conflicting ideas. Bi-Polar disorder or Depression is a subject that is discussed very little in our community and is over shadowed by what people would rather call “crazy.”
Badu also adds, “As Racism and sexism and genderism and prejudice take the main stage on our screens, perhaps, recognize that Depression may be at the very root of it all. Hurt people…HURT people.”
One piece of the collection honored Black Lives Matter activist MarShawn McCarrel, who committed suicide last week near an Ohio Statehouse. Here are some of the photos Ms. Erykah shared with us via Facebook:
