Drake Pens Letter on Police Shootings
While Drake is known for his slick rhymes about running the rap game and pining over past loves, he isn’t the go-to hip hop artist for socially conscious content. For that we turn to the likes of Vic Mensa, Talib Kweli, Killer Mike, and several others.
Still, like many people who were outraged about the shooting of Alton Sterling, and now Philando Castile, Drizzy just couldn’t contain himself. He had to speak out.
The Canadian rapper took to Instagram to express his concern about his “second home,” America.
“It’s impossible to ignore that the relationship between Black and Brown communities and law enforcement remains as strained as it was decades ago,” he wrote on Instagram. “No one begins their life as a hashtag. Yet the trend of being reduced to one continues.”
“This is real,” Drake added, “and I’m concerned.”
Now that Drake has spoken out and is concerned about police violence, I wonder if he’ll take a more active role in the movement for justice.
Also, will one of the biggest artists in the game speaking out cause others to do the same? We hope so.
