Dr. Dre Sued for Song Theft

A 70s soul singer is taking the N.W.A. movie Straight Outta Compton and its producer/former N.W.A. member Dr. Dre straight to the courtroom.

Leroy Phillip Mitchell, aka Prince Phillip Mitchell, filed a federal lawsuit against Dr. Dre and Universal Pictures for $6 million, over the film, coming to theaters this summer, reports The Jasmine Brand.

Mitchell, a 70s R&B singer, states that Dr. Dre and MC Ren used a sample of his hit 1977 song “Star in the Ghetto” on their track “If It Ain’t Ruff’ in 1989.

He claims neither Dr. Dre nor Universal received permission to use the sample and following an infringement notice, the artist and production house proceeded to use the song in Straight Outta Compton.
