Documentary Explores African, American Identity
A Sierra Leonean-American filmmaker is tackling the complex issue of cultural identity.
In her latest documentary, Am I: Too African to be American or Too American to be African?, Nadia Sasso profiles several women of African descent in the media, including Awkward Black Girl creator Issa Rae, who is half-Senegalese.
The film explores issues that contribute to the African-African American divide, such as internalized prejudgments.
“That whole being too American to be African too African to be American, it’s like a fine line that you have to get your identity together,” said Sasso in a trailer for the film. “You have to be able to relate [and] be able to be a chameleon sometimes and be in both places.”
Am I; Too African to be American or Too American to be African? is hosting a series of pop-up screenings this month.
