Denzel Washington, Viola Davis in ‘Fences’
Denzel Washington’s adoration for August Wilson’s work is very evident. He starred in the prolific playwright’s stage production, Fences in 2010 alongside Viola Davis and now he’s adapting the stage play for the big screen.
The two-time Academy Award winner has will serve as lead actor and director of the film, which also includes much of the cast who appeared in the 2010 stage production.
Set in 1950s Pittsburgh, Fences is a complex story about Troy (Washington), a sanitation worker with pro-level baseball dreams that never came to fruition. His frustration causes bitterness which leads to conflict toward his family. Adding another level of turmoil to the situation is the relativity of race relations.
Fences won the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and 1987 Tony Awards for Best Play. With Denzel’s directorial eye adding a cinematic touch to the story, it’s already gaining great buzz. And keeping the story and feel as authentic as possible, he was sure to film in Wilson’s hometown of Pittsburgh to further maintain his legacy.
