Denzel Washington Adapting ‘Ma Rainey Black Bottom’

Denzel Washington is a fan of August Wilson’s work and soon, we’ll all see his film adaptation of Wilson’s, FENCES, alongside Viola Davis when it hits theaters on December 25.

As Washington is known to always have his creative mind ticking and hands on a project, according to Shadow and Act, he’s already cooking up another one of Wilson’s stage plays for HBO.

During a London screening of Fences, Washington confirmed that he will take on the story of 1920s blues singer, Ma Rainey, aka “Mother of The Blues,” and also stated that screenplay is complete and ready for production.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is set in Chicago 1927, and centers on issues of race, art, religion and the historic exploitation of Black recording artists by White producers.

Word has it that Washington is looking to tackle August Wilson’s full American Century Cycle series, which includes 10 plays set in the early 1900s.
