Magic Johnson’s Wife Details Marriage In Memoir
Cookie Johnson is inviting readers into the depths of her life and marriage to NBA legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson in her upcoming memoir.
Believing in Magic: My Story of Love, Overcoming Adversity, and Keeping the Faith, details the couple’s rocky relationship and the day he told her about his HIV-positive status.
According to excerpts received by The Daily Mail, in the book, Cookie shares that it had not been 45 days into their marriage before Magic broke the news to her.
She writes that Magic called her and said “I’m coming home early because I have to tell you something. I have to talk to you, but I’m on the way to the doctor’s office right now.”
In the moments of nervousness and anticipation, she asked, “What’s wrong, do you have AIDS or something?”
It wasn’t until her husband returned home, an hour later, that he revealed his status.
The situation was even more devastating because Cookie was pregnant with their son, EJ, at the time.
Magic gave his wife the option to leave, but she was determined to save her marriage, telling him, “We’re going to beat this together.”
After telling his family, Magic Johnson publicly announced that he was HIV-positive along with his retirement from the NBA. The year was 1991 and he was 32-years-old.
The memoir further details the “personalized hell” she felt she was in while awaiting her HIV-test results. The test was negative.
Surviving the debacle required her to stop thinking about the past and the future and “breath our way through this moment. And the next. And then each one that follows.”
Believing in Magic: My Story of Love, Overcoming Adversity, and Keeping the Faith will be released on Sept. 20.
