Trailer: ‘The Get Down’ on Netflix
Director Baz Luhrmann is taking it to the Boogie Bronx for the upcoming Netflix drama series, The Get Down, which centers on 1970s New York.
The Get Down will highlight an era fueled with grit and violence, laced with hip hop and gauged excitement with its just-to-get by mentality.
The story focuses on four South Bronx teens who have the existence of nobodies. They become tight by looking out for one another, and by creating their own sense of family. They do so through the five elements of hip-hop: rocking the mic, graffiti, dance, DJ’ing and gaining knowledge.
Grandmaster Flash was also added to the cast.
The show presents a dramatic experience of how New York gave birth to hip-hop, punk and disco while on the brink of bankruptcy.
The cast features young, fresh talent:
Shameik Moore, who had a breakout performance in Dope, takes on the role of Shaolin Fantastic, a thrill-seeking and unpredictable, enigmatic.
Justice Smith from Paper Towns, plays Ezekiel, a smart and resourceful teen determined to make his mark on the world with untapped talent.
Skylan Brooks known from The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete’s, is Ra-Ra, the loyal, respected friend and brother also known as the voice of reason.
And fresh face Tremaine Brown Jr takes on the role of Boo-Boo, the old soul. At 14, he aspires to be a rapper and dancer- honing his craft with New York subway performances.
The series debut is due this year but no specific date has been issued. I will definitely be adding this to my Netflix “Watch List.”
