When news broke that Chris Kelly of the 90s hit group Kris Kross had passed two months ago, it shocked the hip-hop community and left us wondering “How?” Now, we have an answer. Toxicology reports have confirmed that his untimely death was due to a drug overdose. An Atlanta Medical Examiner’s office says that the 34 year-old had a combination of drugs in his system at the time of his May 1st death, but did not specify the exact substances. A police report from Kelly’s mother, however, says that she told investigators that her son had abused drugs in the past and that he used both cocaine and heroin the night before he was found dead in his Atlanta home.
Kelly stepped on the music scene at a young age, alongside his friend and group mate Chris Smith. After being discovered by music mogul Jermaine Dupri in an Atlanta shopping mall in 1991, the duo took over the game with their timeless classic “Jump” and their backwards and baggy swag. Earlier this year, the group reunited to perform at So So Def’s 20th Anniversary Celebration, sparking rumors of a long-awaited comeback.
