Spike Lee’s Chi-Raq just knocked one major tasks off of its to-do list: snagging a producer.
Backed by Amazon, the flick will serve as the e-commerce company’s first feature movie.
In January, the corporation announced that it would be venturing into the film industry. Chi-Raq and other original projects acquired by Amazon will be released theatrically and available exclusively for Prime members.
“I’m honored to be part of the film that will launch Amazon Studios and to tell a story that is so important. Please don’t be fooled by the title of Chi-Raq, this new Spike Lee joint will be something very special,” the filmmaker said.
He’s alluding to the backlash regarding the controversial moniker, which combines Chicago and Iraq. Not all Chi-Town natives are fans of the term used to describe their hometown. Some believe it enhances people’s negative perception of the city.
However, no one seems to be opposed to the cast. Nick Cannon, Jennifer Hudson and Samuel L. Jackson are among the actors set to star in the musical comedy, which will explore the violence in the gang-ridden town.
