Chanel Iman recently spoke with The Sunday Times about race issues in the fashion industry. The percentage of Black models who participated in New York Fashion week declined from 8% to 6%.
Iman revealed that even with the successes in her career, she has still been the victim of racism. When asked if she believed race was was truly an issue in the industry, Chanel responded, ” Yeah, most definitely. A few times I got excused by designers who told me ‘we already found one Black girl. We don’t need you anymore.’ I felt very discouraged. When someone tells you, ‘we don’t want you because we already have one of your kind, it’s really sad.”
