‘Blurred Lines’ Fall-Out As Pharrell Speaks Out

Why can’t everyone be happy?

A couple weeks ago, Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke were slammed with a $7.4 million dollar lawsuit for ripping off Marvin Gaye’s 1977 hit “Got to Give It Up”

Williams spoke out for the first time about the court’s decision, sharing with The Financial Times his thoughts:

“The verdict handicaps any creator out there who is making something that might be inspired by something else,” Williams said. “This applies to fashion, music, design… anything. If we lose our freedom to be inspired, we’re going to look up one day and the entertainment industry as we know it will be frozen in litigation. This is about protecting the intellectual rights of people who have ideas.”

But Williams isn’t the only who’s being accused of ripping off songs in wake of the verdict. Recently the Associated Press reported Jermaine Dupri’s accusations that singer Ciara’s new single “I Bet” is a “complete rip-off” of Usher’s “U Got It Bad.”

“Ciara’s new single is a complete rip-off of Usher’s ‘U Got It Bad,'” Dupri said. “I’m clear on what I made and I’m clear on how music influences people and I’m clear on chord changes and how people move things. … It might not be as evident as the ‘Blurred Lines’ situation, but I believe the same thing happened to me.”

Looks like 2015 is not the year of originality … or is it? Check out the singles below and let us know what you think? Are the songs tremendously similar or are people just over reacting?
