Talk show host/rapper/actress Queen Latifah will star as legendary blues songstress Bessie Smith in BESSIE, while Tony Award-winning actress Audra McDonald will take her portrayal of jazz icon Billie Holiday Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill from Broadway to the small screen.

“Playing Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill on Broadway was one of the most challenging and artistically rewarding experiences of my career, and it is an absolute honor to be able to bring Lanie’s incredible work about this extraordinary woman to film, thanks to HBO,” McDonald said in a statement.

Stay tuned for air dates.
