Big Sean Goes Platinum After New RIAA Rule
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has upgraded its rule book. It now factors in video and audio streams into the certification process, making Big Sean’s Dark Sky Paradise and Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly platinum selling albums.
“We know that music listening – for both albums and songs – is skyrocketing, yet that trend has not been reflected in our album certifications,” said Cary Sherman, Chairman and CEO, RIAA. “Modernizing our Album Award to include music streaming is the next logical step in the continued evolution of Gold & Platinum Awards, and doing so enables RIAA to fully reward the success of artists’ albums today.”
With the upgraded law, 1,500 video or song streams equal 10 track sales, which then equals one album sale. And 150 streams equals one download.
Wins for everyone!
