Meet The Showrunner Behind BET’s The Yard

Adding to the star power of BET’s The Yard is Felicia D. Henderson, the woman behind the project.

If her name sounds familiar, it’s for good reason. Henderson’s creative juices were behind cult-classics such as Everybody Hates Chris, Gossip Girl and Soul Food, which happened to be the longest running African-American-themed hour-long drama on Showtime.

Now, The Yard has officially received the green light.

Directed by Rob Hardy (Power, How To Get Away with Murder), The Yard centers on Georgia A&M University, a fictional HBCU in Atlanta, who just appointed its first woman president.

“I’d been thinking about creating a series that would allow me to explore the world of a woman entering a man’s world at the top of the food chain,” Henderson said in a statement sent to JET. “I’m also very interested in the issues of class, race, and gender within the Black community. [The Yard] was an opportunity to explore all of that.”

Anika Noni Rose scored the leading role as Dr. Eva Fletcher who now has the responsibility of saving the prestigious university from bankruptcy. However, while dealing with matters of her career, her personal life—inclusive of a 20-year marriage and rebellious teenage daughter—is on the verge of taking a serious dive.

Rounding out the cast is a multi-racial group of aspirational freshman—a rapper, scholar, band member, football player and a wealthy Georgia A&M legacy student; newcomer Peyton Alex Smith; Reuben Santiago-Hudson (American Gangster); Jazz Raycole (My Wife & Kids, The Soul Man); Sean Blakemore (General Hospital) and Jasmine Guy.

The Yard is currently shooting at the Atlanta University Center (AUC), home of the historic Spelman and Morehouse Colleges.
